Champion insight – Roses in the Ocean

Posted 7th March 2019

The Life in Mind Champions Group is made up of suicide prevention and mental health experts who provide expert leadership and support around the operationalisation of the National Communications Charter.

With this in mind, Life in Mind would like to introduce one of The Charter’s Champions, Bronwen Edwards, Founding CEO of Roses in the Ocean.

Bronwen has provided Life in Mind with an overview of the work Roses in the Ocean conduct, which highlights the importance of including lived experience into suicide prevention work and how embedding The Charter into processes leads to better outcomes for all.

Why did Roses in the Ocean sign The Charter?

Roses in the Ocean is a leading national organisation for the lived experience of suicide. The organisation’s focus is on building the capacity of people with a lived experience of suicide, and providing a platform for their insights and perspectives to inform, influence and enhance suicide prevention throughout Australia.

The Charter creates a benchmark for organisations and government to strive to meet in terms of how they collaborate, communicate about suicide, and work together to collectively save lives.

As well as embedding The Charter into the induction process of all staff, contractors and volunteers who are part of our team, and 'walking the talk' daily, we are able to share The Charter widely through communities and organisations we work with.

Why is being a Champion important to you?

As the founding CEO of Roses in the Ocean, I welcomed the opportunity for our organisation to be a Champion of The Charter as the involvement of lived experience is fundamental to the meaningful development and uptake of the initiative, and is an indication that lived experience is highly valued.

How will The Charter be embedded into your organisation?

Roses in the Ocean has a unique opportunity and privilege to work alongside people with lived experience of suicide every day, in communities all over Australia.

We also work closely with the organisations who engage people lived experience. So, as well as embedding The Charter into the induction process of all staff, contractors and volunteers who are part of our team, and 'walking the talk' daily, we are able to share The Charter widely through communities and organisations we work with.
